Thank You to the Columbia County Health Department

Thank you, Victoria McGahon and Cheryl Ronsani, Columbia County Health Department Health Educator and  Communicable Diseases Nurse respectively, for their excellent presentation last night on the Zika virus and ticks and the spread of Lyme disease.  They shared information about the spread of Zika, the optimum time for testing for its presence in a potentially infected person, preventive measures and the effects of the disease, much of which was unknown to the people who attended this program at the Library.  Additionally, they reviewed information about the signs and symptoms of Lyme disease to be aware of after a tick bite,  detecting and removing ticks and when to seek medical help.  As spring and summer approach, a very timely concern in the Northeast!  We appreciate these women giving their time and expertise to make the community more aware of these two insect-bourne diseases.

A special Pre-Halloween Program with Bruce Hallenbeck

ROCK’N’ROLL MONSTERS: THE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL STORY by Bruce G. Hallenbeck

bkcover-for-websmaller3We invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Valatie Free Library, 1036 Kinderhook Street, for a special pre-Halloween presentation.  Local author, Bruce Hallenbeck will take us on a journey through the world of American International Pictures, the film company responsible for such disparate movies as I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF (1957), MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (1964), THE WILD ANGELS (1966) and THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979).

The author will describe the crisis faced by the traditional American film industry in the early 1950s, a crisis due to one thing: television. Two men from totally different backgrounds pooled their talents and tapped into the burgeoning “teenage” market, and American International Pictures was born. Over the next 25 years, AIP would turn out genre films of every kind, from sici-fi and horror to “beach party” and blaxploitation. But the company also produced prestige pictures like WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1970) and box-office bonanzas such as LOVE AT FIRST BITE (1979).  Hallenbeck’s book, ROCK’N’ROLL MONSTERS, tells the story of how AIP went from being purveyor of drive-in double features filled with monsters and mayhem to a major force in films whose “fast and furious” business model was copied and eventually adopted by the Hollywood mainstream.
